NEW HOMES FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE

A decision has been taken to erect further homes for elderly couples on land acquired by the Crown some time ago. It is an area of one acre and a-quarter in Surrey street, near Macandrew road. The Housing Division of the Ministry of Works is now calling for tenders for the building of these homes. The land was formerly to be a private subdivision, and road access and channelling were built into it a number of years ago. The whole area, and one adjacent to it and fronting on to Forbury road, is partly overgrown with stunted lupins. Five two-unit homes are to be built on the site. They will be constructed so that each will receive a maximum amount of sunshine. A communal development plan is being prepared, and when the flats are completed the grounds will be laid out in lawns, shrubbery and gardens.
