DIFFICULT FOR COURTS
Marriage By Ship Deserters PA WELLINGTON, Apl. 5. Marriage by seamen subsequent to desertion of their ships was commented on by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., « the course of a case in the Magistrates Court today. He said courts would soon have to consider seriously the question of placing some deterrent on youthful marriages, which the court believed were entered into with a view to deserters avoiding deportation. If deserters rushed into marriage they could not expect to be treated differently to other deserters, he said. Edward Trinder, aged 18, a labourer, pleaded guilty to deserting the Timaru Star at Timaru on January 20. Questioned by the magistrate, Trinder said he had been married last month, but had not discussed with his wife the possibility of his being deported. Mr McLachlan said the court did not want to create work for another type of court, and he would look further into the case. Trinder was remanded until April 19 to enable the probation officer to make a report.
