PROSPECTS FOR OAMARU

Splendid Fields In Doubles Events

BEAUGARD MAY IMPROVE

By the Sporting Editor

The distance of the Oamaru Cup, another race for which will be run today, has been changed at times from a mile to a mile and a furlong and finally to a mile and a-quarter. Only one horse has succeeded in winning the Cup two years in succession, and that was Burrangong, who won in 1919 and 1920. Balkis, last year’s winner, will have a chance of equalling this record today. The first race, run in 1906, was won by Mr J. Buckley’s Starshoot, who was ridden by J. McCombe. The record for the race when it has been run over a mile and a-quarter is held by Balkis at 2min 5 2-ssec. The doubles totalisator will be operated on the Cup and the Parkside Handicap, and with good fields in these two events those who are lucky enough to select the winning double are likely to collect a substantial dividend.

The selections for today are:— 11.30: Trial Stakes No. I. —Beau Esprit, Acme, Barry. 12.10: Weston Trot. —True Dora, Lisnaskea, Knightmare. 12.55: Trial Stakes No. 2.—Any Time, Happy Hunter, All Hurry. 1.40: Autumn Highweight Handicap. —Beaugard, Bayfort, t Wee Mac.
