FIELDS REVIEWED
Recent Performances
One of the most consistent performers in the field for the Trial Stakes Na 1 is Beau Esprit, who has several placings to his credit, including a third to What Next and Royal Hoax at Washdyke last Saturday. Acm: has also been racing consistently, his placings including a third in the Trial Stakes at the Oamaru meeting at New Year. At the Geraldine meeting in October. Barry finished second to Addition in a division of the Ohapi Stakes, of seven furlongs, and should be a better horse now. Saxonia and My Hero look the best of the others, but Beau Esprit, Acme and Barry may be the favourites. WESTON TROT At the Kurow meeting in January True Dora made a good impression when she won a division of the Waitaki Trot Handicap, of a mile and a-half, from Attraction and Eileen Lillian. True Dora looks nicely placed on the front mark. Lisnaskea was third to Banquet Hall and Lucky Wrack in a division of the Oamaru Trot at the Oamaru meeting on December 31, and he followed this up with a win in a division of the Domain Trot at the Waikouaiti meeting, Cincinnatus and Ebony Hall following him home. Knightmare has won on the Oamaru course, Ebony Hall was a winner at Omakau, and Highland Prince won at Waikouaiti. Swithindale and Collinette may have most support among the others, but True Dora, Lisnaskea and Knightmare appear to have the brightest prospects. TRIAL STAKES No. 2 In this field Any Time has claims to / favouritism, as he has been placed in four of his six starts this season. The Airway gelding ran a good third to Travesty and Royal Hoax in the Bradley Stakes, of six furlongs, at the Banks Peninsula meeting on March 4. Happy Hunter finished second to Braemorn over six furlongs at the Kurow meeting, and that form places him among the possibilities. ' Two Wingatui horses in All Hurry and Royal Venture are not without prospects. All Hurry has five placings to his credit this season and should be prominent in this field. The selections are Any Time, Happy Hunter and All Hurry. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Form at Washdyke last Saturday points to Bayfort as a prospect for the Hiehweight Handicap, but he will probably find Beaugard a hard horse to beat. Beaugard was placed in his two races at Wingatui last month, finishing fourth to Arctotis, Robinfaye and Open Sky in the St Andrew’s Handicap, of one mile, and fourth to Open Sky, Robinfaye and Extra Flight in the Burnside Handicap, also of one mile. Wee Mac seldom runs a bad race, and his most recent placing was a third to All Serene and Coxswain over seven furlongs at Greymouth last month. He gave 241 b and 231 b respectively to the first and second horses. Bridgehead may need a race, but Romantic and Volomai are capable of springing a surprise. Beaugard may be preferred to Bayfort and Wee Mac. OAMARU CUP The top-weight in the Oamaru Cup, Flying Control, raced prominently at Trentham without being placed* and is a very fit horse. He won the Peninsula Handicap'* at the Banks Peninsula meeting with’7.lo, beating Frances 9.0 by four lengths. He has 9.0 tomorrow, and his task will be very much harder. Arctotis had a very easy win in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Wingatui, and with 8.6 he should be prominent here. Kosher 7.0 beat Salmon Spear by a nose in the Wingatui Handicap, of 11 furlongs, but in tomorrow’s race he will have 201 b more to carry. Balkis will probably find the distance against her, and Sir Abbot has not been racing well. Personality was third to Flying Control and Frances ,at Banks Peninsula, and will meet the winner on 71b better terms. Speedy has not won a race since the Wingatui meeting in October, but her fourth to Jamell, Salmon Spear and Sea Flower in the Otago Handicap last montfy indicated that she was coming back to form. She is nicely weighted with 7.10. Winning Gem looks the best of those lower down, and she may follow Arctotis, Speedy and;Personality in the order of favouritism. WINDSOR HACK HANDICAP
A field of 13 Is engaged in the Windsor Handicap, and, with a win and three placings in her last four starts, Airshaft will be a well-backed runner. Detention should be improved by his race at Washdyke. and Top Class will find favour as the result of his good showing last Saturday. Maungareka is due for a win, having recorded three placings in five starts this season. At the Banks Peninsula meeting she finished third to Oronoko and Flibbertigibbet over nine furlongs, and was finishing on. Scuttle was second to String Band in the Champion HackHandicap, of a mile and a-quarter. at Cromwell, and other possibilities are Redlo Incentive and Pacific Edition. Airshaft, Maunga Reka and Top Class should be prominent at the finish. PARKSIDE HACK HANDICAP The Parkside Handicap looks a very open race a-nd bettyig will probably cover a wide range, several recent winners and placed horses being in the field. Faustina and Skyzami finished first and second in the Smithfield Hack Handicap at Washdyke, and Defectus was third. The readjustment of the weights should favour Defectus, who is a speedy sort and may run on better as the result of his .race last Saturday. Gay John was twice placed over seven furlongs at Wingatui. and the shorter distance should suit him What Next had an all-the-way win last Saturday and will be popular with place bettors. Of the others Plausible is likely to carry most money, but in what promises to be a good betting race, the favourites may be Gay John. Defectus and Skyzami. , REDCASTLE TROT The majority of the horses engaged in the Redcastle Trot Handicap will be seen out earlier in the day, and the form shown by them then will no doubt be reflected in the betting on this event. Among the fresh horses, however, will be Cincinnatus, who had a very easy win by six lengths over a mile at the recent Westland meeting. He went 2min 16 l-ssec from a 2min 23sec mark. Helali will also be a fresh horse He was .an easy winner over a mile and a-quarter at Rangiora last Saturday. clocking 2min 46 l-ssec from a 2min 59sec mark. Cincinnatus and Helali will probably dispute favouritism, with Lisnaskea the next best backed.
