SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Applications For Exemption PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 21. “ The legal position concerning the exemption from attendance of pupils at school is re-stated in a notice which will be included in the next Issue of the Education Gazette,” said the Assistant Director of Education, Mr D. G. Ball, today. The notice is as follows:—“Attention has been drawn to the fact that frequently applications are made for certificates of exemption to be granted under the Education Act, 1914, and regulations thereunder, on the grounds that pupils desire to receive instruction in music and dancing. It is notified for general information that applications on those grounds do not come within the requirements of the Act and regulations, and cannot therefore be granted.” It is understood that the notice states the view of law that authorities have taken in the past and have acted on. The meaning of the law has been questioned following the fining of a Bay of Plenty parent who kept a girl away from school to attend music lessons.
