Seretse Awaits White Paper On His Banishment
LONDON, Mar. 21. Seretse Khama last night cancelled his air passage to his homeland and his white wife. On legal advice, Seretse decided to remain in London until after the Government White Paper—believed to set out the reasons for the banishment—is published ,on Wednesday.
The secretary of the Seretse Fighting Fund said: “ Seretse wants to answer any points which may arise. He may stay another month.”
Seretse visited the House of Commons last night and discussed his case with the members. The diarist of the Financial Times claims that the responsibility for bringing Seretse Khama to London rests with the former Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, Mr Philip Noel-Baker. He describes Mr Noel-Baker’s handling of the Seretse affair as “ ham-fisted,” and says that the former Minister’s “bustling selfimportance” ensured that the case should cause the maximum amount of trouble and receive the maximum publicity.
