America Planning “Atomic Age Navy”

NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8 p.m. WASHINGTON, Mar. 20. Representative Carl Vinson, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, introduced legislation today to start work on an “ atomic age navy ” including new vessels of radical design. He said the existing navy was outmoded and that it must be modernised to meet the threat of guided missiles, jet planes, and modern submarines. Russia was building and organising a modern navy, he said. Representative Vinson’s bill would authorise expenditure of 500,000,000 dollars to start a fiveyear programme of modernisation. This would include the construction of some new vessels of radical design and the conversion of some old ones .to new purposes. The legislation would not only authorise the navy work but also would “ direct ” the President to undertake it. Representative Vinson' said: “It is time we modernised our navy. The ships and planes we now have both afloat and in ‘ moth-balls ’ are ships and planes of a bygone age.”
