GENERAL STAFF CHIEF’S COMMENTS
Rec. 0.5 a.m. LONDON, Mar. 21. , Britain will have a Territorial Army of 500,000 men ready and equipped to go into action at 24 hours’ notice by 1954, said Sir William Slim, Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
Sir William, who was announcing details of the reorganisation of the Territorial Army, said that, although it would now comprise just over 500 major units instead of 580 as at present, its strength at the end of this year would still be nearly 50 per cent, higher than it was in 1938. Sir William added that the units to be dissolved would either be joined up with similar formations a few miles away, or be re-created in the supplementary reserve, which was being reintroduced and organised on a countrywide basis. The changes had been made to ensure a properly-balanced reserve army.
