CAPTAIN SANDY

Tributes To Mr Bain

Mr J. E. Farrell, president of the Oamaru Trotting Club, was in the chair at a reception held by the club on Monday night to welcome Mr J. M. Bain on his return from the Inter-Dominion Trotting Championships at Melbourne. In his remarks, Mr Farrell paid warm tributes to Mr Bain and his horse. Captain Sandy, for their success. He said that Captain Sandy was bred in Oamaru, and throughout his racing career he had been trained on the Oamaru course. It was very gratifying to see the way in which Mr Bain had handled the horse since he took charge of it before it was broken in until he had trained it to be the finest trotter in the British Empire. Mr Farrell added that Mr Bain and Captain Sandy had put Oamaru on the map in Melbourne, where he himself had seen the horse’s performances. Mr Bain and Mr R. Ludemann replied. Mr Ludemann said that credit must go to Mr Bain for the way in which he had brought Captain Sandy out, and that he was very fortunate with the boys he had to assist him. Dr Smith Morton and Mr D. V. G. Smith, on behalf of the Oamaru and Kurow Jockey Clubs, added their congratulations to Mr Bain on his success with Captain Sandy. The toasts honoured were: " The King”:

" Captain Sandy ” (Mr J. E. Farrell— Messrs J. M. Bain and R. Ludemann); ’’ Kindred Clubs,” Mr P. T. Mulligan— Dr A. Smith Morton (Oamaru Jockey Club) and Mr D. V. G. Smith (Kurow Jockey Club).
