AUSTRALIA INCREASES LEAD

ENGLAND NOW SECOND

PA AUCKLAND, Feb. 9. Australia’s strong lead in the number of victories gained in the Empire Games was further increased today when Australian athletes won seven more titles—six in track and field events and one in cycling. Australia now has 25 titles.

The only other countries to win titles today were South Africa, in the Lawn Bowling Fours. England in the fencing, and Fiji in the Shot Putt. The placings gained by the competing countries in finals of all events up to tonight are: — Australia. 25 wins, 19 seconds, 10 thirds: England, 9,9, 11; New Zealand, 8, 16, 11; Canada, 5,6, 9; South Africa, 4,2, 7; Scotland, 2,2, 1; Malaya, 2,1, 1; Fiji, 1,1, 2; Ceylon, 1,0, 0; Nigeria, 0, 1, 0.

Australia has now gained 54 placings, New Zealand 35 and England 29.
