MANSE OPENED
Function At Eveline
Tire opening and dedication of the Eveline Presbyterian Manse took place on Saturday afternoon, a good representation of both St. Paul’s and Eveline congregations being present. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. Marshal], moderator of the parish, who out lined the history of the Eveline Church, and commented on the vision and faith of the office-bearers and congregation in the building of the Eveline Church in 1905.
The further step of building a manse had been greatly expedited through the generosity of Mr James Gerrie in providing the building site, Mr Marshall said. The Synod of O.tago and Southland had made a substantial grant. Mr Marshall also made mention of the bequests of Mr Henry Allan and Mr Edward S. Brewster towards the building, the interest displayed by the Eveline Ladies’ Guild and the response of the congregation to the appeal. The Rev. G. H. Jupp spoke of the vision and generosity of Mrs Dunn, who in the early days saw the need for a church in that part of the district, and gave a section for the erection of the present church.
Mr A. Wilson, chairman of the Works Committee, recounted the steps taken for the erection of the manse. He complimented the architect, Mr I. Steenson, and the builder, Mr A. Petrie, and mentioned the help of Mrs Jupp, Mrs Hedges and Mrs Cairns in choosing the wallpapers and fireplaces.
Mr Petrie, in reply, expressed his pleasure, and that of the sub-contractors, in carrying out the work. He then handed the key to Mrs Marshall, who opened the house.
