EGYPTIAN SUPPORT
NEW REGIME IN SYRIA MILITARY UNITS ARRIVE NZPA—Reuter—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. DAMASCUS, Dec. 29. King Farouk of Egypt has sent assurances to Colonel Abid Chichakli, who led Syria’s coup d’etat on December 19, that Egypt will support his republican regime in Syria. Unconfirmed reports say that Egyptian military aircraft and tanks have already arrived in Syria.
Chichakli’s coup, which was Syria’s third in nine months, is believed to have been caused by the Syrian Army’s dislike of the projected Syrian-Iraqi union.
It is learned in official circles that the Saudi-Arabian Government has also decided to back Chichakli. Reuter’s Tel-Aviv correspondent reports that the evening newspaper Hador, which is the organ of Israel’s ruling labour Party, said Israel would oppose Iraqi or Jordanian intervention in Syria. It added: “If an invasion of Syria takes place the conflict would not be limited to Syria alone because such a move could undermine the existing armistice agreements in the Middle East.” Reuter reports from Cairo that Egypt has banned the export of war surplus materials to Turkey, Greece, Rhodes, Italy and Cyprus. It is understood that the measure is intended to prevent the transfer of materials to Israel.
