Rumours Of Impending Conflict With Soviet Alarm Canadian City
NZPA—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. OTTAWA, Dec. 24. Rumours of an impending war with Russia were circulated in Quebec last night after a mysterious news flash from a local radio station had broken into its regular programme to announce that the Prime Minister, Mr Louis St. Laurent,. had ordered an emergency session of Parliament. An official spokesman in Ottawa immediately denied the report. Newspaper and radio station switchboards in Quebec were deluged by telephone calls, and pre-Christmas festivities and preparations were halted as reports of the broadcast spread throughout Quebec. A threatened panic was averted when all radio stations broadcast assurances that no emergency session of Parliament had been called. The possible basis for the broadcast was said to lie in the sudden cancellation of Mr St. Laurent’s appearance at a Christmas party for news boys. Mr St. Laurent was delayed in Ottawa.
