PROMPT RESCUE

DROWNING AVERTED POLICEMEN ACT QUICKLY Prompt action by two policemen saved the life of an elderly man who fell into the harbour yesterday. The man, Mr Jack Oliver, who is almost 80 years of age, was seen falling into the water from the Rattray street wharf by two men fishing from the Birch street wharf. They gave the alarm, and Constables Tyson and Thomson arrived a few minutes later. Constable Tyson dived into the water and supported the drowning man while his companion secured a boat. Mr Oliver was taken to hospital and his condition later in the day was reported to be satisfactory. A boat from the Port Dunedin was also lowered, but it was not needed.
