TASMAN RECORD

FOUR HOURS SIX MINUTES FASTEST COMMERCIAL FLIGHT PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. The day when civil aircraft will fly the Tasman in four hours was brought nearer on Saturday, when a British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines DC6 lowered the commercial record for the crossing from Mascot aerodrome, Sydney, to overhead at Whenuapai to four hours six minutes. This is four minutes faster than the previous fastest commercial trip, which was made by the same aircraft, RMS Adventure, last September. The Adventure was flying under charter to Tasman Empire Airways and carried 33 passengers. It was commanded by Captain Bruce Dickson. The extent to which the aircraft was assisted by wind in its fast crossing is shown by the time of 5 hours 40 minutes the Adventure took on the return flight to Sydney the same day.
