AIRPORT OF THE FUTURE
STOCKHOLM. Airliners of the future bound for Stockholm will land on a floating hollow concrete airport just outside the city, if a Swedish engineer, Gunnar Wallgren, has his way. The water surrounding Stockholm is a better site for an airport than the new field under construction at Halmsjoen, 20 miles outside the capital, he says. To prevent an aircraft diving in the water should it overshoot the runway, he plans large basins at each end filled with water to a depth of 6ft. Runaway aircraft would be braked by the water in the same way as a boat stops when its engine is turned off. Question is would the water upset the stability of the aircraft and cause it to fall on its side or pitch on its nose To settle this problem, the State Research Council has granted him money towards the cost of building experimental basins on one of the country’s smaller airfields.—Reuter.
