FISHING PROHIBITED
PORTION OF LAKESIDE AT WAIPORI FIRE PRECAUTIONS As there was still a considerable portion of the lake margin available for fishing outside the afforestation area, the erection of notices prohibiting fishing from the lakeside within the area had been authorised, states a report by the Superintendent of Reserves, Mr M. R. Skipworth, concerning work carried out at Waipori on fire-breaks.
The superintendent points out that there still remained the danger of fire commencing within the forest area, and, in particular, from the lake-side. With the raising of the dam , and the consequent increased height of the lake, the largest portion of the margin of the lake within the afforestation area was now unsuitable for fishing purposes. There were, however, some remaining portions within this area where the margin of the lake is not completely covered by tree growth, and these areas represent a possible source of danger on account of the fire risk. The report added that red deer, hares and opossums were also causing damage to the plantations and steps were being taken to deal with those pests.
