SOUTH ISLAND
NEGLECT SUGGESTED
MR McCOMRS CRITICAL PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. “It is a major blow to the prestige of the South Island,” said Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., commenting this evening on the selection of the new Cabinet. “Mr Holland’s list of promotions has only one South Islander out of every five selected for advancement. I doubt if in the selection of any previous Cabinet such scant regard was paid to justice for the South Island. “A second point that deserves comment is the proposed increase in the size of the Cabinet, which can be described as unjustifiable. Several of the new Ministers will have inadequate duties to occupy them. If there is any suggestion that the Civil List Act should be amended to provide additional pay it will be scandalous, and can only be described as a ‘ steal.’ The idea comes strangely from a party which said it was going to economise.” Mr McCombs made these remarks to the Woolston Labour Youth Club, Christchurch, and supplied his comments afterwards.
