COINS CONSIGNED BY AIR
Over two tons of money sailed through the air over the city yesterday. It was, however, no gratifying airborne bonanza nor manna from a Martian mint. To officers of the Bank of New Zealand, who were waiting for the money at the Taieri airport, it was merely the arrival of a routine consignment of specie. The only difference was that it was coming by air rather than by sea. The new cupronickle coins, which will replace older silver coins still in circulation, were brought from Wellington on a specially chartered National Airways Dakota freighter. Loaded in 50 steel ammunition boxes, each weighing about 1251 b and securely sealed, the coins made a full load for the aircraft. The truck which brought the consignment into town, under .the guard of bank officers, was well down on its springs with the weight. The Dakota loaded ballast for its return flight north, all air freight offering having been taken by earlier planes on the normal passenger flights.
