FURTHER SETBACK
RAIN RETARDS WORK ON WATERFRONT TWO SHIPS LIE IDLE More rain fell yesterday and further retarded work on the waterfront. Rain has fallen on ever-" day for the last eight days, and the number of ships at Dunedin wharves now totals seven, with the Port Lyttelton at Port Chalmers. Two of the ships at Dunedin, the Karu, which arrived yesterday from Bluff, and the Waitemata, have little chance of being worked until the beginning of next week. The remainder of the vessels, with the exception of the Canara, are being worked whenever possible with full crews.
The Clydebank was finished at Victoria wharf yesterday and sailed for Nauru and Ocean Island in the morning. But shortly after noon, the freighter Karu arrived from Bluff. Another gang of men was cleared for a ship when they finished working the freighter Waiana last night. She was originally to sail at 4 p.m., but was finally despatched at 8 o’clock for Timaru. It is expected that if the Port Lyttelton can be cleared from Port Chalmers, a gang of men from there will be able to assist in catching up on the ships tied up at the Dunedin wharves.
