WELCOME RAIN
DRY SPELL BROKEN DOWNPOUR IN CITY The long dry spell of weather in Dunedin came to an end last night when rain fell in sheets from about 7 o’clock onwards. During the day the temperature was high—the maximum being 76.5 degrees—but a heavy shower fell in the afternoon and in the;evening the rain began to fall steadily. In a brief space of time gutters were running like miniature streams and water was spouting from under the wlheels of cars and trams. Taxi firms did a brisk trade transporting shoppers to their homes. Residents of Palmerston and Waikouaiti, who have been subjected to water restrictions in recent weeks, had not experienced a rainfall when the Daily Times rang last evening, but the sky was black and they were hopeful that the reservoirs would be filling before morning. Farmlands are desperately m need of rain in that area.
