DEATH OF A HORSE
Sir, —I am sure everyone must be shocked to read about the treatment meted out to an old horse in Central Otago. I wonder what kind of an SPCA we have! in this country that allows these things to happen, especially when they were informed of the matter beforehand. What is their excuse this time? They usually have a good one. They are so humane they even go to a gun club meeting and watch our tame pigeons being slaughtered. We, the public, have a right to know what is being done about that poor horse. I ask the SPCA (if they can be called such) if .the person responsible is to go free, or is he to get the punishment he deserves?—l am. etc., Compassionate Woman.
Sir,—Can you enlighten the public as to whether the SPCA is taking action in the case of the faithful horse which was left to die a lingering death by starvation? ’’ This society is constantiv on the alert to bring about better conditions for the handling of stock and to end cruelty wherever it exists ” —so says the advertisement. I am waiting to see what the real position is.—l am, etc.. Humanity. [The president of the SPCA, Mr. R. Fountain, to whom this letter was referred, said that the society was booking into the matter.—Ed.. ODT.I
