PIGEON TRAPPING AND SHOOTING

Sir,—Thanks to the statement secured by you from the acting Mayor, we now know definitely that “ at no time has the City Council given permission for the trapping of pigeons to be carried out in the city,” but that nevertheless, it " allowed ” the trapping to take place in the Queen’s Gardens. „ _ _ So it plainly emerges that the Gun Dog Club invaded the property of the citizens of Dunedin, trapped hundreds of our friends the pigeons—the property of the citizens, if of anybody—and carried them away to serve its own cruel purpose. Nobody interfered to stop this action. Something like a slur has been cast upon the fair name of our city. Not a yen’ nice story, this, to get abroad, as it will! Eyebrows may be lifted a little even as far afield as Edinburgh.—l am, etc., Janet Simmers.

Sir, —The acting Mayor, Cr L. M. Wright, says that the Dunedin City Council has not at any time given permission for the trapping of pigeons to be carried out in the city. In the face of what has happened, this seems almost incredible. Would it be possible for, say, one committee to have given permission without it becoming known to a General Committee? There are such things as confidential reports, are there not? I have also heard of iron curtains—which, by the way, could be removed by a discerning public. If the council disapproves of the trapping and shooting of the pigeons, it will take action. If no action is taken, the public will know the real truth.—l am, etc., Humanity.

Sir, —I am glad that one of your correspondents has seen fit to draw attention to the. shall we say, benefits enjoyed through the existence of the animal kingdom. But he forgets that there are many who do not take advantage of such. There are also manv other happenings to animals that he lias not mentioned. In any case, two wrongs will never make one right. As for the prevention of war, he is the one best able to remedy that. Each individual must begin with himself before the world can be a different place. Let him follow the teachings of the Bible and all will be well. —I am, etc.. Humane.
