NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Lord Boyd Orr Receives Award OSLO, Oct. 12. Lord Boyd Orr, recently director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1949. The announcement was made by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament,
Sir John Boyd Orr, as he was then, became famous throughout the world after World War II for his. work in helping to rehabilitate agriculture and food production. He was knighted, in 1935 for his work as agricultural research worker. He became a baron this year. The prize for 1949 amounts to 150,289.62 Norwegian kroner, or £7814 at the present rate of exchange. Lord Boyd Orr said to-night that the money accompanying the prize would be devoted to promoting peace. “The only important thing in the world to-day is to get the nations to co-operate,” he £aicL
