WATERSIDE OFFICERS
DISCIPLINARY ACTION PREDICTED REMOVAL FROM AUTHORITY Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. Disciplinary action against the president, Mr H. Barnes, and secretary, Mr T. Hill, of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, is expected to be taken by the Government very soon. As a prerequisite to the establishment of the Waterfront Industry Authority on a new basis. Government action for the removal of Messrs Barnes and Hill from membership of the authority seems certain. It is doubtful whether the five-man waterfront authority will be retained. The Government may prefer a smaller body on the theory that the fewer union representatives there are the less argument there may be. • An indication of the Government’s attitude was given by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, when, at the Public Service Association conference this week, duping a reference to Government service tribunal priposals, he spoke of “ a certain five-man tribunal ” which certainly had not proved a harmonious body. It was not so much the system of settlement of disputes but the attitude of the parties that mattered, said Mr Fraser. It was essential that the persons appointed should be prepared to work for a settlement.
