Power Supply Position Gratifies Officials

PA WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. Though still exercising their usual extra care in the handling of the power supply and demand over the winter months, electric power officials are agreeably surprised at the storage position and the favourable weather conditions so far enjoyed in the South Island. Heavy rains have accumulated plenty of storage water to offset the danger of a late thaw. So great has the volume of storage water at Lake Pukaki become that provision has been made to drain off some as a precautionary reserve against a sudden thaw and any consequent fresh pressure on the dam. Power consumption continues to be high, but the position is regarded officially as satisfactory. The North Island last week used a record total of electric power—namely, 36,154,040 units, compared with the South Islands 15,865,099 units.
