DR J. P. KAVANAGH APPOINTED

Bishop Whyte has received notification from the Apostolic Delegate in Sydney, Archbishop Marella, that the Holy See has appointed the Rev. Dr J. P. Kavanagh, of Wellington, as coadjutor administrator of the Diocese of Dunedin. Bishop Kavanagh, who- is 36 years of age, was born at Hawera.

Educated at the Hawera Convent and Sacred Heart College, Auckland, Bishop Kavanagh studied at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, from 1932 to 1936 and was ordained by Archbishop O’Shea at St. Mary of the Angels, Wellington, on September 6, 1936. Later he went to Rome for a post-graduate course in the Institute of Law of the Pontifical Lateran University, where as part of his course he undertook special studies at the Sacred Roman Rota. On the completion of his studies he graduated as a Doctor of Canon Law. After his return to New Zealand in November, 1940, Bishop Kavanagh was for four years curate at St. Peter and Paul’s Parish, Lower Hutt. In August. 1944, he was transferred to the Archbishop’s House, 7 Paterson street, Wellington, and was appointed to the Diocesan Tribunal as Defensor Vinculi and as canonist to the archbishop. In addition to his diocesan work Bishop Kavanagh has been in charge of the work for the Polish children received as guests of the country by the New Zealand Government and has represented the hierarchy in all matters concerning these children. As part of his work in this direction he was responsible for the setting up of hostels for boys and girls at Lyall Bay and Island Bay respectively. Dr Kavanagh is the eldest son of Mrs Margaret and the late Mr Lawrence Kavanagh, of Hawera. He is one

of a family of 10, comprising six boys and four girls. The family comprises Messrs Patrick, Robert. Timothy, Desmond. and Brendan, Mrs Mahoney, and Misses Joan, Margaret and Mary Kavanagh, all of whom live at Hawera.
