POTATO SHORTAGE IN SOUTHLAND
Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL, Aug. 22. Potato stocks in Sotuhland are very low, although with careful use consumers could prevent the position from becoming too acute. One of the difficulties with which producers have had to content was “ panic " buying as soon as a shortage occurred. Potatoes are still available in the city, but not in large quantities, and householders cannot purchase by the bag They have to be content with enough for immediate requirements. Normally Southland gets potatoes the Tuatapere district, but this year, through the ravages of blight and wireworm, the returns have been only a fraction of those of previous years. Supplies were further reduced by export to the North Island.
