LUCKY INVESTMENT An investment of 10s each way on two horses on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting returned an Oamaru resident, Mr T. Carter, a total of £ll3 3s 6d. Mr Carter said he was only an amateur punter, and he backed a horse if he fancied either its number in the book or the name of the steed. He is a well-known Rugby player, having represented Auckland, Otago, and Southland. MANUAL EXCHANGE Work has commenced on the installation of four positions of the manual telephone exchange at the Oamaru Post Office. The positions have been set up, but there is still a considerable amount of wiring to be done. When completed, the manual exchange will assist to reduce the number of people waiting for tele* phones in the Oamaru borough, as approximately 400 subscribers will - be connected. Many houses have been wired for the new service, and when the board is completed these subscribers will be connected immediately. The department is waiting for further materials for the exchange, and it will be some time before it can be completed. NO DIALLING No dialling will be required by those connected to the new manual telephone exchange being installed at the Oamaru Post Office The calling parties will lift their receivers, and attendants at the exchange will connect them with the number required. Telephones, with dials attached, are, however, being installed so that when these subscribers are ultimately placed on the automatic exchange no reinstallation of telephones will be required The system to be used is the same as that in operation in Invercargill MISSION SHIP

The* Church of England Melanesian Mission ship Southern Cross, which will visit the principal ports in New Zealand in August and September to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the Melanesian Mission will call at Oamaru on September 29. Included among those travelling on the ship is the Bishop of Melanesia, Bishop Caulton .Archdeacon H P. Reynolds, and the Rev. Dr E. C. Fox.

FOOTBALLERS INJURED Advice that J. Buzan has received a fractured wrist and K. Nuttall has received a knee injury and would not be available to play for the rest of the North Otago Rugby representative team’s tour of the Seddon Shield districts was received at last qight’s meeting of the union from the manager of the team, Mr D. S. Loder, A request was made for the union to send the name of front and middle-row forwards so that, a selection could be made should there be any further casualties. The request was referred to the selectors.
