There is no catch—-the answer is when it’s a Hitch. A Hitch is a temporary knot, generally one which fastens a rope to a spar or a ring. At right is shown a Fishermen's Hitch or Fishermen's Bend and at left the Timber Hitch. To tie Fishermen’s Bend: Take a turn round the spar thqn make a half hitch over the standing part (A) and through the round turn, finishing with another half hitch round the standing part. Useful for making fast an anchor or a bucket for dipping overside. To tie Timber Hitch t A Pass the rope round the spar making a half hitch round standing part (A) and then continue twisting running part (a) for several turns in the same direction. Useful with a second half hitch at shown for towing a spar.
