WOMEN BOOKMAKERS
WILL BE TREATED THE SAME AS. MEN MAGISTRATE’S WARNING PA WANGANUI, Aug. 22. Eileen Annie McKay, a married woman, entered a plea of guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to a charge of keeping a common gaming house. The police evidence was that £9O had been taken in bets at noon on Saturday. Mr Preston issued a warning that women would be treated no differently from men. It seemed, he said, that the husband and wife had been carrying on bookmaking for quite a considerable period the husband having been fined previously. If the court looked more lenientlv on women, said Mr Preston, this would encourage larger operators to use females in their businesses. A fine of £SO was imposed.
