TWENTY-FIVE ACRES OF ENDOWMENT FOR RAILWAY EXPANSION

The Otago Harbour Board last night received advice that the Railways Department would take 252 acres of the Southern Endowment on the Wharf street frontage for expansion purposes. The department has authority for this action under a section of the Harbours Act, 1923. The area which has been taken is a substantial part of the board’s reclaimed land, some of which will eventually be used by industrial concerns. A Dunedin railways official told the Daily Times last night that new marshalling yards and goods sheds would be built on the reclaimed land. The present yards and sheds often became congested and expansion was imperative. Plans had been drawn up and they would involve the removal of the present sheds; A new entrance would be made to the yards which would mean alterations to Wharf street.
