WHOLE OF JOB ON NEW HIGHWAY TO BE ONE CONTRACT

The whole of the work of the Albert street extension is to be let as one contract, which will include the construction of the bridge at the junction of School street and Highgate. This was decided by the City Council at its meeting last night, when a recommendation to this effect in committee by the Works Committee was confirmed. The council adopted a recommendation that the tender received for the construction of the first section of the extension should not be accepted, as the tender was considered by the committee to be more than a reasonable price for the work. The council decided to instruct' the city engineer, Mr S. G. Scoular, to complete the plans for letting the whole work as one contract, and that he be authorised to employ an outside engineer when required to permit the completion of the plans for the new bontract without delay. The city engineer was also given authority to act, after conferring with the superintendent of reserves, Mr M. R. Skipworth, in-respect to the removal from Littlebourne House of materials required by the council. A separate tender is to be called for the removal of a dwelling in Littlebourne crescent taken over by the council. The city solicitors were instructed to give the owner of a property in Highgate notice to vacate the premises, which were taken over by the council by proclamation under the Public Works Act.

Preceding the discussion, Cr Wright asked the acting chairman, Cr Armitage, in open meeting, how many houses still had to be purchased by the council for the Albert street extension. He had been told that the delay in completing Albert street was due to the shifting of poles by the city electrical department. These had now been shifted, and he thought that it was time the whole job was completed. . Cr Armitage replied that he was pleased that the electricity department had shifted the poles. This had been awaited for some time. He said that there were two houses which still had to be purchased by the council. One had been referred to in committee at the last meeting of the council, and reference was made to the other in a report read that night.
