N.Z. AND DEFENCE
Sir,—Reference was made in Wednesday’s Daily Times to a referendum being held concerning the important question of conscription. This means that all persons over 21 will get the vote. : . Yet if conscription does come in it will more or less follow. on the same lines as it did in 1922. One then had to do three years’ training, etc., on reaching the age of 18. That meant that the average person was finished when he was 21. ■ • ,/• Why should those of 21 and over get a vote on this question? Should-not[those of 18 and over get the vote, for the question will more directly affect them as the citizens of the world of the next few years? Trusting someone can do something about this,—l am, etc.. Teen-ager.
Sir,—Britain and the dominions have had, through unpreparedness, to endure the slaughter of two world wars because their enemies judged correctly that the people would not elect any Government which would take sufficient and necessary measures for defence. This is a serious reflection on democratic government.—l am. etc., M.
