RABBIT BOARDS

Sir,—The, proposed Tuapeka rabbit district has caused quite a stir. Never has a spark created so great a flame. There is no need for me to join issue with others as to how to destroy rabbits, as we must all know by now how easy that iS. . But there is a matter I wish to make some reference to. That is the tactics being used to endeavour to get signatures to a petition praying that no board be formed in the Tuapeka district. • It. is being .said that the committee intends bringing in Greenfield district in order to get sufficient rates. That is definitely not true. • Also, - reflections are .being cast on the personnel of the committee. I can assure critics that all our actions in this matter are an open book, and by so acting we have obtained more sigantures than they will'ever hope to. .. I also understand a certain. Rabbit Board's balance sheet is being ; paraded. I happen to know a little of the history of the board in question, and my conclusion is that you may as well judge a farming community by the most inefficient flarmers among • them. Why not get balance sheets from other boards, for instance, Woodlands, Wallacetown-Otatara, New River Hundred, East Road-Makarewa Board, and others I could mention? A visit, to these areas would convince the diehards. ' ; . Together with - other members of the committee, I have 1 given of a lot of my time that I could ill-afford .in connection with the proposed board! We have no axe to grind; the work was not of our seeking. Speaking for . myself, I do, not care twopence' if a board is formed or not, but there is one thing I am sure of, that If something is not done with this rabbit pest right awaythere are quite a few in the area who may as .well wash up right now. In ray case, while my limbs allow me, the pest will never get me in that position, in spite of the inactivity of other property owners. I am prepared to be rated so that rabbits on other properties may be killed, and I continue to destroy my own. —I am, -etc., Rongahere. Jas. McGovern.
