TWO IDLE DAYS
FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE PA WELLINGTON, May 25. The freezing workers at the Wellington Meat Export Company’s works at Ngahauranga have not worked for the past two days. They state that they object to the appointment of a night watchman who is not a member of the Freezing Workers’ Union. The man concerned was a carpenter at the works and it is understood that he has returned to his work pending settlement of the dispute. The men state that they consider night watchmen should be members of their union as they are included in the freezing workers' award. They discussed the question at a stop-work meeting on Tuesday morning and did not return to work afterwards. Meetings were held to-day between representatives of the Labour Department, the management and the men and a proposal to refer the question to a disputes committee will be put before the men at a meeting to-morrow.
