Desert Trek Will Reappear in Hurdle Events at Wingatui
An interesting entry for the hurdle events at the Wingatui meeting is Desert Trek, who last season finished third to Batal and Turf -Topic, in the Otago Hurdles, and followed this up by running third to Foxchase and Bay Robe in the Lambton Hurdles at Trentham. In the 1946-47 season the Nightmarch gelding won the Winter Hurdles at Trentham from Mary Lee and Good Armour. A fine stayer and a good jumper, Desert Trek is seven years old, and there may be a good race in him yet. Jottings Handicaps for the first-day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting are due on Monday, and acceptances on Tuesday. Through Tractor, on her maternal side, however, she has jumping blood, and she may develop into a useful performer over fences. Working Solidly Fine Night continues to get through solid work at Wingatui, and appe rs to be thriving on it. He has raced consistently this season, but has not been the luckiest of horses, and a win for him at the Dunedin meeting would be popular. Salmon King At the CJC Easter meeting Salmon King was one of the leaders all the way in the Autumn Hack Plate, of one mile and a-quarter, and finished second to Bar Gaifette. The Salmagundi gelding has been doing well since then and should pay expenses at the Dunedin meeting. Returning to Form As a two-year-old, Oronoko won two of his five races and finished second in another. Since then he has collected only two placings, one of which was at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, and it may be that he is returning to his two-year-old form. Oronoko is by Sir Crusoe from Hortense. by. Manchmeel from Marfaux, by Martian. A Likely Favourite Sea Beacon went from last at the halfmile to finish second to Highthorne in the Trial Handicap: at the Southland meeting last month, and if the Lo Zingaro fillv reproduces that form she should be prominent in the Trial Stakes at WingatuL Salmagundi. Gelding Gay Prince, who will have his next race at the Wingatui meeting, has been started nine limes this season for two wins and two ipinor placings. The more recent of his wins was at the .Otautau meeting, last month, when he was successful in the Strathmore Hack Handicap, in which he began slowly. One of F Voight’s team.
