Gough’s Pride Appeals For Chief Handicap At Canterbury Park
SPORTING
The Winter Handicap, the principal race at the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday, has drawn a fine field of'improvers, including several recent winners and placed horses. ' Nicely placed on the front is Pride, who this season has been started 12 times for two wins and four placings, the most recent of which was a second on the concluding day of the Forbury Park meeting, when she finished behind thaj good horse, Gay Night. Another very much improved pacer, is Prince Hall, who won a double at the recent Auckland meeting and is now in the stable of J. M. Bain, of Oamaru, who is having a very successful run with his horses. He looks a good place prospect at least. Commander Scott will also be considered. At the Forbury Park meeting he was fourth in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap to Dillondale, Dragoman and Gough's Pride, and on the second day he improved on this to finish second to Sand Piper in the James Memorial Handicap. He gave 24 yards to the winner.
Of the horses further back Checkmate makes most appeal, but judged on recent form the three horses named above are likely to be the favourites.
