Trotting Colts To be Exchanged For Italian Sires
Two of the colts sold at the national yearling sales at Easter have been selected for export to Italy. In exchange, a North Island breeder will receive two well-bred Italian stallions, which are expected to arrive in the Dominion in time for next season. The "Italian stallions who are likely to come are Carlino and Hollo, both being of pure American blood. Carlino is bv Calumet Desmond from Silver Joe], and is nine or ten years old. Rollo is by The Laurel Hall, the sire of Dillon Hall, from Miss Jockey, and he is a year older than Carlino.
Carlino was one of the best trotters in Italy during the 2nd NZEF occupation of Trieste in June, 1945, and at a special trotting meeting at which Kiwi horsemen took part he was driven into second place in the principal event from the back mark of 60 yards by Sapper W. D. Scott, who is now on the staff of the New Zealand Trotting Calendar. Rollo was also a high-class performer about the same time as Carlino, and he was among the contestants at the 2nd NZEF meeting. i The yearling colts who will go to Italy are by U. Scott from Garner, and by Light Brigade from Palometer, states the Trotting Calendar. Both colts are well equipped for what will be required of them in Italy, for they are more trottingbred than pacing-bred. Only trotters are raced in Italy, pacers being barred. “ This is the first occasion on which trotting horsss have been purchased in New Zealand for export to Italy, and It will be interesting to see how these colts, both from successful families, line up when they are eventually raced against the American - bred and Italian - bred trotters. Both colts will be left entire with a view to being used at the stud when their racing careers are over.
