SEVERAL SURPRISES

VICTORY GOLF TOURNAMENT SHAW AND YOUNG DEFEATED PA ' AUCKLAND, May 13. There were several surprising results when the match play events of the £7OO Victory Golf Tournament began at the Titirangi Club’s course to-day. 1 In the professional division the two Australian competitors, V. O. Walker and R. Want, were both eliminated, and A. J. Shaw was defeated in the second round. In the amateur event, E. W. Young, co-leader with D. L. Woon in the Amateur Medal Championship of Wednesday and Thursday, was beaten after leading A. R. Kitto by 2 up with 4 to play. L. B. Johnston, outstanding amateur of last year’s Victory Tournament, did not survive the second round, and the national amateur champion of 1938, P. U. F. Smith, was beaten at the twenty-first hole by the young New Plymouth competitor, B. D. Bam field. Both the professional and amateur divisions of the match-play event were advanced to the semi-final stages. In the professional .division the survivors are A. E. Guy- of Akarana, winner of the £l5O first prize in the Medal Championship; J. Weir, of Grange; James Galloway, of Whangarei: and R. H. Glading, ol Christcnurch. Guy will play Weir and Galloway will play Glading in the semi-finals. In the amateur division the semifinalists are the New Zealand representative from Christchurch, D. L. Woon, J. P. Conditions to-day, especially in the afternoon, were abominaole. Rain flooded the bunkers and hollows, and made difficult the elementary task of the proper gripping oi the club. In the circumstances some of the scoring was very good. Ralph, in the morning, was heading for 68 or 69 when he stopped. He was out in 32 and six holes ahead of R. Hay-Mac-kenzie. Woon, in the afternoon, when the rain was heaviest. c cored 72. Glading was two under bogey playing to the fifteenth against J. Lambie, and then fired a 20-foot putt into the hole for a birdie and the match. Guy was just a little better than Walker in the first round, but he had things very much his own way against Want in the afternoon. H After laying particularly well through the tournament, Shaw was defeated by Weir when his seconds and putts just lacked the necessary touch. The most exciting of the professional matches occurred in the morning when W. Renshaw, a left-hander, took Want to the twenty-third hole and then only lost by three-putting.
