NEWS OF THE DAY

Aid Was Forthcoming The crippled Auckland boy, David Lyons, who recently won £SOO in an art union, would have been assisted by the Auckland Crippled Children Society when' he had finished growing, according to information received in Dunedin from the society. The last report of the medical officer of the society stated that the boy would not be ready for an operation until he had finished growing. That would be in about two years’ time. When that stage was reached it would be the responsibility of the hospital board in the district to provide the treatment, but the Crippled Children Society would pay all incidental expenses for the journey to Dunedin if such treatment were considered necessary. The society paid for 30 or 40 similar cases every year.

Air Service Derupted Fog and heavy rain disrupted air services to and from Taieri aerodrome yesterday morning. Northern planes were forced to land at Hilderthorpe and their passengers were brought to the city by taxi. It is understood that the flight schedule was resumed later in the day.

Surplus Aircraft The six war surplus Hudson bombers which have been stored on the edge of the airfield at the Taieri for several months and were recently offered for sale by tender are understood to have found purchasers. The prices are believed to have ranged from £23 to £SO. The original price of these obsolete aircraft was nearer £14,000.

Power Failure An intermittent electricity fault—a type difficult to locate—resulted in a power failure in the southern area of Dunedin and on the Peninsula about noon yesterday. Good work by the staff of the City Electricity Department enabled the power supply to be restored to the Dunedin area about 2 p.m. and to" the Peninsula at 4 o’clock. There were minor interruptions of the power last evening. Cyclist Charged Charged with being drunk while in charge of a bicycle, William Brown was fined £3 at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Invercargill, on Wednesday. Senior Sergeant G. A. Howes said that the accused was seen in Kelvin street by the city traffic inspector, Mr C. Harvey. He was in a very drunken condition, and was trying to ride his bicycle. He tried to get on the machine, but fe** on. “The accused was brought to the police station and there was no doubt about his condition,” Senior Sergeant Howes added. The accused said he had taken some rum for a cold and it had disagreed with him. War Memorial Proposal The seventeenth proposal for a war memorial has been received by the secretary of the committee set up to investigate suggestions. The new proposal is that a fine asphalt road should be laid down to follow the crest of the hill from the Brown House along Opoho to the national centennial memorial on Signal Hill. The correspondent suggests that the road should be a wide one to permit of parking areas from which people arriving in Dunedin from the north could take time to look down upon the city. On leaving the memorial, he suggests, the motorists could come into the city proper by passing the University buildings and the Public Hospital.
