Talk on Design At Home Economics Association Meeting

A large attendance of members of the Otago Home Economics Association listened with interest to a talk on " Design—its Nature and Uses,” by Mr J. E. P. Murphy, a lecturer at tire Home Science School. , , , There were two types of design, conscious and unconscious, said the speaker, and two divisions —the fine arts and the arts of necessity. These were distinguished by the purpose of the object—i.e., by the spiritual or material factor. Design, however, was important in both, whether for beauty or utility, and many modern utensils combined both, in contrast to many of the modern paintings. In design, it was important to consider form, pattern and colour, for to be good a design must have formal unity. It was a defence against chaos and intellectual laziness, for beauty required hard work and worthwhile effort to make it a conscious organisation towards functional unity.
