PRAYER CHAMBER

UNITED NATIONS NEW HEADQUARTERS WORLD-WIDE DEMAND NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, Apl. 17. The United Nations plans to build a special chamber for prayer and meditation in its headquarters now being constructed in Manhattan, says the New York Times correspondent at Lake Success. It will be nondenominational and will consist of nothing but a bare-walled room with only the simplest furnishing. It is understood that the decision to build the chamber is the result of persistent demands from believers throughout the world that the new headquarters should have a place where delegates can seek Divine guidance.

The whole subject of Divine worship is a touchy one fbr the United Nations, for the Charter contains no mention of a divinity. There have been many requests for prayers at the opening, of the meetings, but it has been generally agreed that because of the wide range of religions among the member nations it would be best to sidestep the issue altogether. The correspondent adds that most countries in the United Nations have not yet heard about the chamber and there is real trepidation concerning Russia’s reaction to the project because of Russian atheism. It is contended, however, that the chamber will be so simple that even the Russians could use it for non-religious meditation.
