ANOTHER POLICE CHIEF

REQUIRED IN KENTUCKY Rec 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Apl. 17. The Harlan County police chief, Mr Ambrose Metcalfe, was murdered tonight in the main street at Shields, Kentucky, five miles from the township of Evarts, which has had six police chiefs in the last eight months. Mr Metcalfe was shot in front of a restaurant whose manager was arrested and charged with Metcalfe’s murder. The arrested man was recently acquitted on a charge of illegal possesison of whisky in Harlan County, which is dry. It was bootlegging that lay behind the gunplay in Evarts, where, since August, one police chief was murdered, one was himself arrested and charged with murder, and three others resigned after a few weeks in office.
