EASTER TENNIS

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEN’S SINGLES TO PATERSON

MISS PYLE DEFEATS MISS ROBERTSON

J. Paterson won the Otago Championship Singles title yesterday for the third time when he defeated D. Radford in the final. Miss Margaret Pyle won her first Otago title by defeating Miss Marion Robertson in the ladies’ final.

The Men’s Singles final was fought out by two players of contrasting styles. Paterson, the winner, concentrated on good-length driving as the main feature of a very consistent game. His drives were deep and placed well towards the corners, carrying just a little more than medium pace. His sorties to the net were followed by crisp volleying which was well controlled. Although in the early stages his overhead work was erratic, his smashing improved as the match advanced, and in the second set he assumed control. Radford gained an early lead of 3—l mainly through a series of almost unreturnable drives and drive volleys. Paterson’s steadiness and powers of retrieving many of Radford's best shots soon counteracted his opponent’s severity,* however, and Radford's errors became a greater scoring medium than his brilliant shots. The score of 7—5, 6—2 was a fair indication of the run of play.

Miss Pyle and Miss Robertson gave an exciting exhibition of tennis in their three-set encounter. Miss Pyle’s tactics were similar to those she employed to defeat Miss Mavis Kerr in the semi-final. She was steady, kept a good length, and concentrated mainly on the backhand corner, with an occasional sharp crosscourt from her forehand to keep her opponent from edging towards the backhand court. She used a high-trajectory drive to her opponent’s backhand corner effectively. A feature of her play was her intense concentration. ' Miss Robertson played beautiful tennis in the second set, when she was near to brilliant. Her fast flat drives and her net work were at this stage devastating, and she allowed her opponent only one game. In the third set, however, Miss Pyle’s accuraicy, both in lobbing and with passing shots, plus her almost complete lack of errors, wore the St. Clair player down and forced her into mistakes. Both players, however, produced excellent match tennis, and as both are young they should be seen in Otago finals for many years to come.

J. C. Robertson and J. Paterson won the Men’s Doubles Championship for the third time, defeating R. G. Sincock and R. A. Guy in the final. The winners, in addition to having a tried combination, were able to finish off their openings more effectively than their opponents, who frequently failed upon critical game points. Miss Mavis Kerr struck New Zealand form for the first time in the Ladies’ Championship Doubles, and with Miss Maud Jolly defeated Misses Marion Robertson and Margaret' Pyle 4—6, 6—4. &—O. The result was more an indication of Miss Kerr's form than of the respective merits of the others, all of whom played good tennis. Miss Jolly made fine openings for her partner to finish off, while Miss Pyle acted similarly for Miss Robertson, who, while not as effective as Miss Kerr, smashed well. Miss Kerr’s third set form was brilliant, her volleying and smashing often being unreturnable. The Mixed Doubles semi-finals and finals will be pflayed to-day.
