Success in Principal Event at Oamara

LIGHTS ON AN OUTSIDER

Although the conditions were somewhat wintry, with a cold southerly bringing up light showers, the attendance on the second day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday was much larger than was the case on the first day and the racing was more interesting. Speedy, who finished fourth in the Cup, improved on that form to win the Gardiner Memorial Handicap decisively from Responsive, who was not started in the Cup. Saieda ran on much better than he did in the Cup and finished a good third. Bren Gun, who was made second favourite each way, did not reach the front in the early stages and he does not appear to show his best form when such is the case. Lights On paid over a quarter of a century to win the Waitaki Hack Handicap, and Paper View’s dividend in the final event was nearly a score. The going was in splendid order and good times were recorded. During the day the totalisator handled £32,591, compared with £14,206, the total for the meeting being £58,107, compared with £35,214 10s last year.
