NOTES ON THE RUNNING

NOVICE STAKES No. I The full field went to the post for the opening event and Open Range and Indiana were selected as favourites. Highthorne and Nocturnal were the last to leave, and Village Beauty and Air Sonnet were the first to break the line from Open Range, Airshaft and Beau Esprit. With four furlongs to run. Village Beauty and Air Sonnet were showing the way to Airshaft, Open Range, and Highthorne. , Indiana and Lady Melville moved up on the bend, and into the straight it was Village Beauty and Air Sonnet from Open Range, Indiana and Lady Melville. Open Range finished best to win bv a length from Indiana, who should be out of maiden company very soon, with Lady Melville touching Air Sonnet off for third. The order after the placed lot was Village Beauty, Beau Esprit, Highthorne, Princess Ragi and Reformed. WAIKAURA TROT Joygiver hitched slightly at the start but settled down quickly to follow Mystery Maid past the stand, with Red Sea next ahead of Swithindale, Final Return, Mischievous and Roman Lass. Running across the top, Joygiver went to the front and was followed into the back bv Mystery Maid, Red Sea, Final Return, Swithindale and Mischievous. The two last-named went up to the leader half a mile from home, and then came Red Sea, Final Return and Dowry. As they ran to the home turn, Joygiver was stopping a little and Fernbrook Jack, who had been well back, was coming through the field. Swithindale and Mischievous were the first to straighten up. followed by Mystery Maid, Joygiver, Final Return, and Fernbrook Jack. The last-named put in a fine run to get up and beat Swithindale by a length. Mischievous was three lengths away, half a length in front of Metropolis, who came from a long way back. The next to finish were Mystery Maid, Romany Lass, Major Gaillard and Joygiver. NOVICE STAKES No. 2 Sweet Lorraine was backed as a certainty for the Novice Stakes No. 2 but once again she had to be content with a third after being well back in the early call. Haughty Lass, Sir Dragon, and Lady Jan hung at the start and Silver Chase and Jacquee were the first to break the line from Miro Chabo, Cold Feet and Boon Companion. Miro Chabo moved up to Silver Chase at the four, and three furlongs from home they were trailed by Jacquee, Boon Companion. Tattoo, Royal Saleve and Lady Hotspur. Miro Chabo did not go on with it and Silver Chase led into the straight from Jacquee and Boon Companion, with Sweet Lorraine beginning to move up- Boon Companion got a good run on the rails and won easily from Jacquee. Sweet Lorraine came very strongly for third ahead of Cold Feet, with Silver Chase, Royal Saleve, Sailor Girl and Miro Chabo next. PUKEURI lIIGH-WEIGHT Bridgehead dropped out of the I-ligh-weiglit Handicap and in the field of 13 that went to the post Wee Mac and Bay Fort carried most support. Eve Acre did not jump out smartly and Atreus was the first to show out from Nullah, Air Lord, Bay Fort, Knight Crusader and Grand Forest. . Except that Bay Fort moved up to third there was little alteration as the field swept past the five, at which stage Prize Ring was running a very much improved race in sixth place. The well-ridden Bay Fort was not asked for an effort until the straight was reached and he drew away for a very easy win from Nullah, who was improved by his first day's race. Knight Crusader finished well for third and was followed in by Atreus, Grand Forest, Prize Ring and Great Chum Wee Mac never looked likely GARDINER MEMORIAL HANDICAP Bobby Dazzler was taken out of the big race and Balkis and Bren Gun were selected as favourites, but neither reached a place. They left to a good line and ran past the stands in close order. Saieda was the first to work clear, and shaded Soeedy and Balkis as they went out of the straight. Grill dropped back last in the close-running field and Saieda led past the seven from Speedy, Responsive, Balkis, Bren Gun, and Thornbridge. Five furlongs from home Saieda was still the spearhead from Speedy, Responsive, Balkis, Bren Gun and Thornbridge, and Grill was reducing his leeway. Responsive went up to Saieda on the turn and there was nothing between them into the straight, where Speedy started a sustained run that took her home an impressive winner from Responsive, who nosed Saieda into third place. Balkis was fourth, and then came Grill, Thornbridge, Revolte, Banshee and Bren Gun. • WAITAKI HACK HANDICAP Bowling Green was a warm each-way favourite for the Waitaki Handicap, but she lost her chance at the start through dwelling badly when the barrier lifted Dinnyhazer and Running Brook got out well and led into the back from Wandering Minstrel, Lights On, Lodestar, and Ara Chief. Salmon King put in a good run as they went down to the four and he took the lead, followed by Wandering Minstrel, Dinnyhazer, Ara Chief and Lights On. Salmon King, Dlnnyhazer and Wandering Minstrel came into the straight practically in line, with Lights On and Running Brook also in the call Lights On got a slant on the rails and came on to win well from Dinnyhazer, with Salmon King third and just beating Zarcon, who “ dropped from the clouds.” The next to finish were Running Brook and Wandering Minstrel. LANDON TROT HANDICAP Retribution began smartly to lead past the post for the first time from Helen Grattan, Dillon Again, Night Bomber, and Doradene. Into the back Retribution was celar from Helen Grattan, Night Bomber, Doradene, Final Return, Red Lexie and Dillon Again. Retribution was first into the straight with Swithindale, Night Bomber, Helen Grattan and Red Lexie tn ihe call, and Aerogard was beginning to move up on the outside. Halfway down the running Retribution looked like winning, but Helen Grattan and then Aerogard threw out challenges and in a close finish Aerogard just won from Retribution, with Helen Grattan third and Final Return fourth. Swithindale. Night Bomber and Dillon Again were next. PARKSIDE HACK HANDICAP Vitamin and Attractive Air carried the bulk of the investments on the final event, but after getting out well and having every chance the best they could do was to run third and fourth respectively. When the field settled down Vitamin and Attractive Air were the leaders and they were followed past the five by Crease, Exchange, All Alone, and Paper View. The last-named put in good work on the bend to be handy to Vitamin and Attractive Air as they entered the straight, with Crease and All Alone next. Finishing strongly the consistent Paper View won decisively by a length from All Alone, who just beat Vitamin, with Attractive Air right up in fourth place. The order after that was Crease, Golden Chips, and Exchange.
