ANXIOUS TIME
WHEATGROWERS IN SOUTHLAND HEAVY LOSSES REPORTED Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL, Mar. 27. Southland wheatgrowers who have been late with their harvesting have had an anxious time during a week of abnormal rainfalls and floods. It is estimated that fully 30 per cent, of the wheat crop of the province has yet to be harvested. Unless growers wait until the grain is dry, they will have to write the crop off as a total loss. There is still a chance, however, of saving it. , . , Losses have been fairly heavy in Southland. There have been several reports of hundreds of sacks of wheat left in the paddock being ruined by flood waters. Most of the oats have now been headed. The grading of the deliveries to hand has been quite good. In addition to the hundreds of sacks of wheat lost through the floods during the week, a considerable amount of hay was also lost. Hay lying in the paddocks has already begun to rot and the remainder, which has been driven into the ground, will be almost impossible to recover.
