HUGE WATERSPOUT
SIGHT OFF OAMARU COAST
UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, Mar. 27. Oamaru residents saw a huge waterspout off the coast early this afternoon. It was an amazing sight, said Mr W. A. McKenzie, who, with his family and Mr E. Dickson, saw the waterspout from Eden street. They watched it for some minutes until it disappeared in the murk of cloud and rain. Mr M. Aspros confirmed the story. He said that he was in the launch St. Michael off the foreshore opposite the Oamaru Gasworks when he saw the waterspout come up the coast past Cape Wanbrow, about five to six miles out to sea. There was a dense black cloud between 500 and 600 feet above the sea. The waterspout was wide, with a mushroom effect at the top, similar to that seen in pictures of an atomic bomb explosion. This huge waterspout was followed by a second, long and thin in appearance. “It was a terrifying sight,” Mr Aspros added. “We lost no time returning to the harbour, as there was no knowing where the waterspouts would go. We did not want to get mixed up in them.”
