SHIPS HELD UP
CONDITIONS AT BLUFF Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL, Mar. 27. Shipping and waterfront labour at the Port of Bluff have been uncommonly handicapped by the abnormal weather which has been sweeping Southland for more than a week. There has been more shipping and more employment offering than usual, but the elements have had a big say in preventing progress. The loading of the Waitaki has been unduly prolonged but a break in the weather today suggests that she may get away to-morrow. The Harpathian, which has been sheltering off Stewart Island since Friday afternoon, cannot get a berth at Bluff until the Waitaki sails. She will load wool and general cargo for Britain. The sailing dates of the Rakaia, Waimarino and Wellpark at Bluff will also be set back. Not for many years have shipping activities at Bluff had so many interruptions because of weather. The watersiders have not been able to complete a full day’s work for 10 days. There is plenty of willing labour offering.
